You get attacked and grabbed by the neck by both hands. React fast and furiously.
I’ve seen so many different ways to escape and react to a strangle hold. Let’s not hesitate here with thinking what to do.
Simple uncomplicated technique that are natural and easy to remember are always best. Try and react before the hands get a firm grip or within a few seconds. Stay calm. Try any of the below with what you consider the most vulnerable target.
- twisting the fingers
- knee or kick to the groin
- striking the forearms
- pulling down on the forearms
- punch to the face
- fingers in eyes
- strike the throat
- apply pressure point technique to face or neck area
- use one or both arms to secure the attackers arms
- push your chin down towards your chest to relieve pressure
Assess the attacker and consider your size, their size and your skill level. Shout loudly and be extremely aggressive.
As with my other Self Defence articles in the Self Defence category I have included several Youtube videos with a variety of the best techniques.
The below video is best performed before the attacker has a tight grip. Push down on the wrists then duck under. Described as a Brazilian Jui Jitsu technique by Babs Olusanmokun
The next video is based on Krav Maga. It begins similar to the last video with a grab pushing the wrists down and out but this one simultaneously has a leg strike to the groin. The instructor also performs some muscle memory exercises to assist.
The next is from Nick Drossos at Nick Drossos Defensive Tactics. This is a great video with lots of real life alternatives. I use to teach the first technique at my TaeKwonDo lessons.
The above gives a good insight into what techniques can be used. Above all – react fast and furiously.
