Do you have to do the splits in Martial Arts ?
Ballet, Gymnastics and and similar pastimes require that doing the splits are very nessessary, but do you really have to do the splits for Martial Arts ?
Taekwondo is well known for high powerful kicks. I have practiced Taekwondo for about 15 years and I have never seen anyone in a class I have attended do the full splits.
Most experienced Martial Artists know that the higher you kick, the less power is produced. In many Martial Arts it is suggested that you shouldn’t kick higher than the waist due to issues with speed, balance and power which all reduce the higher the kick.
Types of splits
Middle splits – also known as box splits or side splits. These are done by sliding both legs out to your side whilst facing forward. (See the photo at the top of this article)
Front splits – these are easier and involve sitting on the floor with one straight leg out in front of you and the other placed straight out behind.
Below is a woman doing a Karate side kick. It’s a high kick that would probably make contact with a persons head. She is not doing the splits. Being able to do the splits is not necessary.

Below is a man doing a front kick just above the waist. No need to go any higher.

Splits are not a requirement
There are many theories and articles on doing the splits. Some say stretch everyday, some twice a week. Some have a variety of different stetches to assist you in being able to do the splits. It is a challenge and nice to do but not necessary in the Martial Arts.
A good flexibility routine
A flexibility routine is without doubt a good idea whether you workout every day or a couple of days per week. Tailor it to suit your Martial Art or personal goals.
Anyone who has tried yoga for any length of time will confirm that stretching definitely has a positive effect on wellbeing and fitness.
With the correct training anyone can do the splits ?
This is often quoted by many people who can do the splits. Many people can with correct training but take a look at the following Youtube clip that provides an excellent explanation as to why many people are unable to perform the splits. It is by Eli Montaiguey of Taiji World
In conclusion
Stretch regularly as part of your routine but don’t be concerned if you can’t do the full splits. Train Happy. Visit my Work Out category
